We’re committed to effective and consistent supervision
At the ECB, we have dedicated teams that deal with banking supervision matters. We also work closely with national supervisors. Together, we ensure that banks are supervised effectively and consistently across the board.
Separation of responsibilities
ECB Banking Supervision operates independently from the ECB’s monetary policy activities. To avoid potential conflicts of interest, the staff and decision-making bodies for these two areas are kept separate.

Under the leadership of the Chair and Vice-Chair of the Supervisory Board, various specialised business areas focus on different aspects of banks’ operations. They work to ensure the safety of Europe’s banks and of the financial system as a whole.

The ECB takes supervisory decisions that banks are legally required to follow. These decisions are made by our Supervisory Board and then need to be adopted by the Governing Council.

We collaborate closely with national competent authorities to supervise Europe’s largest banks. These authorities are also responsible for directly supervising the smaller banks in their countries, which we oversee.
