Annual report

The ECB publishes an annual report on how it carried out its supervisory tasks. The report is usually published in March of the subsequent year and is presented to the European Parliament by the Chair of the Supervisory Board of the ECB at a public hearing.

Banks are overall well-capitalised with robust capital and liquidity positions. Banks’ aggregate Common Equity Tier 1 (CET1) capital ratio returned to the historical highs seen in 2021, standing at 15.6% in the third quarter of 2023.

In the third quarter of 2023, banks’ aggregate annualised year-to-date return on equity stood at 10%, up from 7.6% one year earlier. Net interest margins were the main profitability driver in 2022 and the first nine months of 2023.

Supervisory decisions

The Supervisory Board took 2,403 supervisory decisions in 2023. Most were related to fit and proper assessments (48.4%), own funds (9.6%), national powers (7.9%), internal models (7.7%), the Supervisory Review and Evaluation Process (4.7%) and ad hoc reporting (4.7%).
